| How cold is it? It's 44 here, so I'm glad I can have mine closed. Btw... that's a classic SNL sketch. | |

| I hope we get at least one snow this year. It's been a long time since we had any. I took kid2 to Hallmark today so she could pick out a Webkinz for her birthday and I have to say I felt the call of the Christmas cards. None of them spoke to me but now I feel like starting the hunt. | |

| The sending of the cards is one of the things about the Christmas season that drives me crazy. It seems I only receive them from my friends with picture perfect lives. I haven't done a blessed thing since last year. | |

| And we must have the stupidest politicians in the world. Oil approaching 100 bucks a barrel, most of which goes to the MidEast....to the people who hate us...., and our politicians who are worried about the fucking mating habits of elk won't allow drilling in Anwar. And Jeb Bush, the brother of possibly the most bumbling president in a generation (except for Jimmy Carter) won't allow drilling off the Florida Coast because of fears of an oil leak on the beaches. We deserve every fucking problem this country has. | |

| Sounds like you've got PMS. It's painful to follow politics too closely. For me, ignorance is bliss most of the time. I'd rather we head towards becoming less dependent on oil than find new ways to support our habit. One of my friends got a hybrid and she drove us to the movies the other night. When she dropped me off I couldn't even hear the engine running when I got out. I swear my computer cranks louder than that thing. | |

| The bad little secret about hybrids is that to charge the batteries, most of the electric comes from coal fired plants....which are much more polluting than gasoline....and takes more of it. It's just a lot cheaper to run on caol fired electric than gasoline. It's all smoke and mirrors. | |

| I think the car charges the battery. But whatever, I think the technology is a step in the right direction to get us free from the middle east because that shit over there ain't getting straightened out in our lifetime. | |

| Yeah, I think Toyota makes the one where the battery is charged via the braking system, but most hybrids or total electric cars rely on the "plugin" alternative. I looked into electrifying a car: The cost is about 6k to convert. Of course the lighter the car, the more efficiency, but I just can't see myself riding around in a Yugo or Geo Metro....the cars recommended....! They get 60-80 miles per charge, whereas something like a midsize like a Corsica or sedan would only get about 20 to 30. The battery technology is the thing. The lithium ion battery is the most efficient, but they can't keep the fuckers from exploding, and the medium range for charging the next efficient...the common lithium battery....will only take about 500 charges before it goes kaput....at a replacement cost of about 3 grand. Some of the cost of having a total electric is offset by the lack of oil changes, xmsn fluids, coolant. etc...because there is none. Just the electric motor. Over the life of the car, you come out ahead, but the sacrifice in range, convenience, comfort and safety outweighs the higher running cost of a regular gasoline car imo. | |

| My friend's is a Toyota and believe me she is giving up nothing on the comforts. It has everything including a sweet GPS. Her husband is my ex-boss and he drove it when we went to that business meeting. It was comfortable and quiet on the interstate - moreso than my mini-van that's for sure. I plan to go smaller for my next car (hopefully trading in the mini-van after the 1st of the year). I'd doubt it will be a hybrid because of availablity and cost but I'd like for it to be. I'd really like to drive a stick again but that idea is meeting with a lot of resistance from the other drivers in the family. We'll see. | |
