The man sat in the chair watching the blue smoke from his cigarette curl towards the ceiling, and checked his watch again. He had checked it not two minutes ago, but he was nervous, and it looked like his target was running late. He glanced out the window of the small room he was in, and noticed that it had started to drizzle. "Damn" he muttered. "This shot was going to be hard enough without this crap starting."
He rose from his chair, stretching, reaching his arms towards the ceiling, but staying away from the open window in case anyone might be looking up this way, and see him. His rifle was fixed to the tripod, and he quickly inspected it to make sure that it was ready for use. He would only have a few seconds to get the shot off, and there was no time to waste in making any adjustments. He looked through the telescopic sight, to see how the rain might obscure his vision, but found it still to be adequate. "If it doesn't rain any more than this, it'll be ok" he thought to himself. He made sure the laser was working properly, and pinched the trigger slightly as he looked through the sight. The beam cut through the misted air perfectly, and shone a small round red dot on the wall of the Paco's restaurant two blocks away. He stepped back and away from the window, and lit another cigarette, and sat back down in the chair situated behind and to the side of the rifle. "Christ, I bet I've smoked half a pack of these things since I've been here" he said aloud, and looked on the floor to make sure none of the discarded butts had fallen out of his pocket. The floor was clean, except for a few stray ash flicks, which he quickly rubbed into the carpet with his shoe.

He checked his watch again, and thought "What's keeping that bastard. Surely no one tipped him off. Only me and Trini knows he's gonna get hit tonight." Trini was the man who had hired him, to put a bullet through the head of Juan Garcia, a small-time petty crook that had cost Trini a bunch of money when a warehouse theft went wrong and three of his men were caught redhanded by the police....tipped off by Garcia in exchange for dropping some charges that would have put him behind bars for at least ten years. "Trini was definitely not the kind of man you fucked around with by sicing the police onto one of his operations, but Garcia was never one for being too bright. Oh well, it meant an easy twenty grand for me" he thought, checking his watch again, and seeing that not even a minute had elapsed since he last checked it. "Damn....I must have the jitters. What the fuck, he probably got an extra light or something....settle down , Maxwell, he'll show! It's "all you can eat" night, and Garcia never misses one of those. He'll be here, just bide your time."

Maxwell sat in the dark, watching, waiting for Garcia to show. Finally, down the wet street, headlights shone, and he could see Garcia's car approach the parking lot of Pacos. Maxwell shifted into position behind his rifle, and clicked off the safety. He tickled the trigger once more, to make sure the laser was still working, and was relieved when he saw the familiar red dot paint the wall briefly. Now, he adjusted the rifle and squinted through the scope to find the entrance of the restaurant just a few feet from his practice wall. Through the scope, he was now looking directly at the single door entrance of the restaurant, and he waited for Garcia to show his fat corpulent body in the crosshairs. He didn't have to wait long. Garcia was waddling as fast as he could from the parking lot, concerned that he was late for the buffet, and hurrying as quickly as his pudgy legs would carry him. Finally, he entered the vision range of Maxwell's rifle scope, and Max knew that within two seconds, Garcia's brains would be part of the decor of the restaurant for the next few days. As he approached the entrance, Max painted the back of his head with the laser, held his breath, and slowly squeezed the trigger.

With a soft Pfffffff, the 30 caliber soft lead bullet exited the barrel of the rifle. Max barely heard the sound as the silencer on the end of the barrel muffled the retort of the exploding shell inside the chamber of the gun. The bullet tore through the air at 2900 feet per second, fueled by the igniting gasses from the 400 grain shell, and traveled directly toward the head of Garcia, now reaching for the handle of the door. As his hand was about to grasp the handle, Maxwell, still looking through the scope, watched a mass of pink jello explode across the frosted glass of the entrance door, and then quickly shatter. Garcia stood there for perhaps half a second, and then dropped to the concrete like a bag of stones, and lay motionless. Within five seconds, Max had the rifle disassembled, bagged and heading for the doorway. It took him another thirty seconds to navigate the two flights of stairs, exit the building, and get into his car, which had been parked just outside the exit door. Starting the car, he carefully drove away, obeying all traffic laws, made a call on his cell phone, and reported to Trini that the job was done. He listened for a few seconds, grunted "Ok" once, and headed across town to where he was going to be paid for his work.

It was about a twenty minute drive across town to Halo's, an out of the way nightclub where Max was headed. He knew the place well, and was a frequent patron of the place. As he pulled into the parking lot, he secured his bagged weapon in the trunk of his car, and walked quickly to the entrance. As he entered, there were a lot of nods thrown his way, and he greeted everyone there that he knew with a returned nod or a wave of his hand. But tonight he wasn't interested in socializing....he was headed to the back and down the stairs where a large not-so-secret casino operation was under way. It had been in operation for years, and had never been busted, thanks to the massive payoffs to the local and state politicians.

Max had reached the stairs, and walking down the flight towards the casino, he felt a sense of exhilaration, of being alive. Strange how blowing someones head into mush did that for him, "but oh well" he thought....takes all kinds to fill up the world." Reaching the bottom of the stairs he greeted the two gorillas that maintained security, and guarded against "undesireables". he greeted them by name, and as they unlocked the door for him to enter, they just grunted in acknowledgement. "How the hell they expect any tips" he thought to himself, "unfriendly bastards". Entering the casino, he quickly saw that it was humming....perhaps a hundred people here tonight trying their luck....but he had no interest in them. He quickly strolled across the floor to the payout cage, and asked the teller to get Donnie. She called for him, and in just a few seconds, he poked his head out of the door from the counting room, saw who it was, and motioned for Max to meet him around to the side door. Max waited at the side door for a few minutes, until finally he heard the door unlocking, and watched Donnie step out with a large envelope in his hand. "Trini said to tell you "good job tonight" as he handed max the envelope." "Tell Trini thanks, and anytime" max replied, and stuffed the envelope into the inside of his coat pocket, and turned away. He immediately went to the men's room, and finding it empty, chose a stall for privacy. He quickly opened the envelope, counted the bills, and nodding his satisfaction at the count, stuffed them into both pants pockets, and proceeded back out to the casino floor. He hurriedly navigated the various games scattered haphazardly around the floor, and headed straight towards the blackjack pit. Approaching his favorite dealer, though God knows why, he never could beat her, he greeted her cheerfully..."hi sherry, how's it goin' tonight"

"It's startin' to slow down a bit....we were really busy for a while. Didja come to play tonight, or just flirt with me" she said with a smile.

Max reached into both pockets, and withdrew the wads of bills, and threw them on the table..."whew" sherry whistled. 'Whadja do, murder somebody.....what're you doin with all that" she asked

"You gonna ask dumb questions, or gimme some of those pink 500 chips" he smiled back at her. She just shook her head, and motioned for the pitboss to come over to her table.

"Hi Max" the pitboss said upon approaching the table.

"Hey shorty" Max replied, giving a dig at the man's stature, who only stood 5'1", and smiled broadly. "I hate this little fucker....never could stand him" max thought, still smiling. You gonna count the money and gimme some chips, or you gonna stand there all night....you are standing, aren't you? Max continued to dig.

Tommy just stood there for a second, and then told Sherry to count the money. As she laid out the bills in neat rows of thousands, she finally announced "Twenty thou".

"I concur" Tommy said. "Give 'im his chips."

Sherry counted out twenty thousand in pink chips, and slid them over to Max.

"Place your bet, Max" she intoned.

Max quickly divided the chips into four stacks of five thousand apiece, and placed them on the betting circles on the table. he was playing four hands, the maximum allowed, and betting five thousand on each one, also the maximum. I'm gonna win a million bucks tonight, Shorty. Get ready to cash me out"

"Ok" Tommy replied drolly. "deal 'em out, Sherry"

Sherry dealt out five hands, four to Max, and one to herself. As she turned over her up card Max saw that it was a six, and gave a whoop. It was the best card a dealer could have for the player, for the odds of busting the hand was good. Max's first hand was a no hit 20....two kings....and he waved Sherry off. His second hand was a 19, also a strong hand, and again he waved her off. His third hand was a total of 8, and as he indicated for her to "hit" him, she turned over an ace....11....to give him another standing hand of 19. His last hand was a bust hand of 15, and playing basic strategy, waved her off in the hopes that she would bust her hand. Sherry turned over her down card.....a nine....giving her a 15, and forcing her to hit again. Max's heart leapt, and he was already counting the twenty thousand in chips she would be sliding over to him in a few seconds. Sherry took her hit, and she heard Max say FUCK as she turned over an ace....not busting but giving her a 16....but forcing her to hit again. As she slid the card out of the shoe, she looked directly into Max's eyes, and not even looking at her card as she turned it up, could tell what it was by the expression on Max's face. Looking down and confirming the 5 , she said "Dealer has 21." Max sat there dumbfounded as he watched her take back the chips she had just given him not more than a minute ago, and it took all the strength in his sphincter muscle to hold back what was trying to force it's way out of his roiled stomach.

"Better luck next time, Max" Tommy the pitboss said, as he turned to walk away, and trying his best not to smile.
